Ferguson TED20 - Assembling The Front Axle-Part 1 - Video Tutorial

Contributor Gordon begins assembling the front axle in his video restoration series of a TED20. The front axle is a part of tractor that supports the structural load, absorbs shock, absorbs torque, transmits the power to the wheels, and facilitates steering. The front axle joins the two front wheels together and is powered by the driveshaft.  With the front axle being one of the most important components of a tractor how do you know when it is not working?

Signs Of A Failing Front Axle

  • Loud clunking noises
  • Clicking/popping sound when turning
  • Grease leaking from underneath the tractor
  • Malfunctioning brakes
  • Loss of acceleration
  • Sluggish steering
  • Tyre misalignment
  • Wheel wobbling/vibrations

Axles are robust components, but damage can occur after a knock with a pothole or other object. In this video Gordon takes us step by step through the assembly of the front axle.

'We managed to get all the parts we need and can now proceed with the rebuilding of the front axle. In this part 1 we reassemble the main carriage frame, the main axle beam with the Bush (#A63840) and Axle pin (#A67677). See if you can spot the obvious error (which we correct in Part 2!).'
